Serbian Royal Church in Bournville

Lazarica Church, Bournville.

Built by Serbian refugees who made Birmingham home after WW2 under the patronage of exhiled Royal, Prince Timoslav of Yugoslavia - who would later go on to marry at the church in the 1980s.

Serbians have made Bournville home since WW1, when 25 refugees were invited by the Cadbury family. After the war, the Serbians returned home, however ties between Birmingham and Serbia would be resurrected at the outbreak of WW2.

By the 1960s, the community had become settled in Bournville and were keen to remember their ties to home, remortgaging their houses to purchase a plot in Bournville to build a church. Construction was completed in 1968, and largely used materials from Serbia. Today, the church is a meeting place for Serbians across the UK.
