Charles II escapes the West Midlands for France.
After losing the Battle of Worcester in 1651, Charles II was on the run from the parliamentarian army. His escape to Europe, supported by the aristocracy in the West Midlands, played a pivotal role in the restoration of Englands Royal Family.
Lady Jane Lane, from Bentley Hall near Walsall, played possibly the biggest role. Riding with the King from Bentley through Quinton, Rowley Regis, Bromsgrove, Wooten Wawen and Stratford, on the way to Bristol, with the 6ft 2 King disguised as her female servant. The King later sailed to France, returning 1660 as King of England.
