Castle Old Fort is an Iron Age Hillfort site in Stonnall. Probably constructed sometime between 500BC and 100BC.
The site was home to a small community, who lived inside a compound surrounded by walls built from earthworks and possible topped with timber walls.
The sites mysteries are still largely concealed. The only archeological digging took place in the 17th Century, unearthing flint arrows and Roman coins from the period of the Emperor Nero (54 AD to 65 AD), showing the site was likely still in use in the 1st Century.
Much of what else historians know comes from terrain modelling, identifying the outline and size of the site.
Still unknown is the purpose of the site, it’s situated on a hill, but not the highest point in the vicinity.
Historians know of another Iron Age fort a few miles away on Watling Street near Lichfield, and the Roman settlement of Letocetum is also close by - which would explain Roman artefacts that have been found at the site.
