Birmingham Superprix - Road Racing in Birmingham (but not as you know it)

Between 1986 and 1990, Birmingham's roads hosted a Formula 300 motor race - The Birmingham Superprix. Formula 3000 was the understudy to Formula One.

With a street circuit including the Belgrave Middleway and Bristol Street, it was a popular event that attracted crowds of over 60 thousand to Birmingham's city centre.

Despite narrow chicanes and hairpins to rival the Formula One race in Monaco, the weather didn't always deliver, with the 1986 race being halted due to rain.

Recently, there were plans to revive racing in Birmingham, with proposals for a Formula E racing meet. Although these never took off, we'll keep our fingers crossed.
